Step 1: Don’t retire 5 school district-owned vehicles at 9 years of age with less than 30,000 miles on the clock. These cars aren’t idled and see very light use, they’ll last a lot longer than 30,000 miles and 10 years of age.
Step 2: Don’t replace those aforementioned 5 school district-owned vehicles with $155,000 worth of 2017 Ford Explorers.
Step 3: Fix the fuckin’ roads instead of buying unnecessary vehicles.

Think they’ll take a Jetta as trade?

My local government’s parks and rec department is still using an Aerostar. An Aerostar! And it still looks good!

They should have bought those Taurii used. That era of Taurus hit basic transportation value in like 5 years. $2k has bought a minty one since like 2012. That’s $10k for an entire fleet of cars.

It’s maintenance budget has been $310,776 over its lifetime :P

Funny thing is the city also owns one of these, has to be at least a ‘93. It’s minty fresh. Can’t have more than 70,000 miles on it haha.

That’s why they should have just kept them and ran them for another 10 years. They’re reliable and cheap to maintain.
Then somebody decides to buy brand new Ford Explorers that cost $30,000 each to replace cars that rarely hold more than two people and travel negligible distances every year.

That’s sweet

But if you don’t spend all the money you can’t ask for more money next year.
Many agencies have messed up priorities.

I agree that it’s a total waste to replace them. They are really cheap and easy to maintain, as you mention, so it seems obvious that they should just keep them. Panthers are also great cars to keep indefinitely because they’re so common, durable, and parts are cheap.
I question the decision of many police departments to buy those new Exploders. I feel like they will be a lot harder to maintain than these older cars.

Agreed.
A local police department started buying used P71 Interceptors for special assignment use and for backup cars. They replaced a bunch of craptastic Chargers.

Where are they getting explorer’s for $30k? The one we got at work stickered for $36K and it’s just a cloth seat XLT. Seriously hard to do repairs. They had to drop the sub frame to fix a leaky AC line.

base models, not including additional fees though.
